Review of final design

In the end I am happy with the clean fresh, uncluttered look of my final design. The white background works really well and the colour pops out from the background image. It hints workbook look, but still really clean.

I ended up using a spry menu on the left hand side for the projects to go in, this meant that there was less object on the page and one can go straight into the project you choose. I also changed the orange hover aspect, changing it to a light grey background colour change.

The index page works well with the highlighted images, when you click on the image it will go straight to that gallery. I made the image numbered 3 or 6, with thumbnail hover change to change the image in the gallery.

The links have been put together and so far, so good.

Gets brighter when you hover over the images with the text of galleries. I like these images together better that my photoshop mock up.

Here is my about page, I made the text box out of other guide lines that were on previous pages so it relates. I think the left hand margin is better than right, even though other text is on the right side from gallery... 'About' text sounds kind of professional! May want to get more personal, create a welcome note etc. At this stage I like it ;)

At this stage I have decided that to have the coloured tabs as a background instead of linking them to a page in my site.

However I maaaaay make a kind of fun page where it is sketchbook things, doodles, play that kind of thing, almost as a secret page. You would hover over the tab seemingly randomly and a link to 'other stuff' would come up. Just an idea if I decide to use them.

I am quite happy with the uncluttered look of the gallery.

Will use the click and change method of changing images. There will be 2 collections in the screen printing as I have moved my studio work to illustration. The other galleries will use this template.

After looking at the work I have done I am definitely keen to keep it simple and all about my designs, free up the space and work on balanced proportions. I think my second explorations weren't successful at all. Back to the drawing board!

This time I am trying to compact the side menu into a solid feature, as a module. It would be floating. The large image would be a a roll over of the various galleries, this one is for digital.

I am unhappy about the colour... I will have to strip the features right back and try to get back to the edgy, fun aspects of the mood and the relationship to colour, not so much dark grey.

Thinking about having grey text with highlighted coloured text on white, more similar to the last posting, the latter layout works with the whole side part being the menu, more balanced than the top one.

This is a continuation from moodboard 1, I quite like the idea of tabs being a border, but worry it may be too constricting. I am finding it pretty hard to work with colour on my page! may have to go to totally text minimalism with splash of colour subtley somewhere, instead of images.

I think this title is really successful for my name, the 'j' is quite interesting. Not too sure about the titles though, they are a bit 1930s perhaps.

These two fonts look quite good together, quirky and modern...

Looking at different fonts for title, including found fonts from dafont.com. Went on the site to find a simple sans-serif and found a few surprises. I want to a clean-cut line width type font.

Side menu content?

I am a bit of a fan of this simple page layout. The side bar menu of Cat Lauigan's site is separated into different works by process. The side bar is a permanent fixture, something I would like also. I wish this art was her home page it is so effective with the clean cutouts and fresh colour! The homepage is found through her name title. Really lovely font, going to find out what font it is hopefully.

Digital, Screen printing and Illustration titles have replaced 'Gallery' from site map 1. Added colour to the map. You can kind of see where the gallery is going and how it is interconnected.

May not make sense to have the galleries connected when you can access them from the side menu, but could be good to have teasers of them on the different process pages.

This first draft of my site map shows a lot of connections within the website. I will have sub-menus for the gallery meaning one can easily back track to previous pages. Basically on the site one will always know where they are at.

For this site map I am going with a module idea, meaning no scrolling. I look to Jo Chueng's website for some inspiration.

One thing I may change is the idea of the 'gallery' in the side menu that may instead be replaced by 'Digital,' 'Screenprinting' and 'Illustration.' This means that my textile interests are on every page within this menu, reinforcing what I do to the viewer.

For my site navigation I am planning on having a permanent side panel. It means that navigation is really simple as you always know where to go within the site. 'About' and 'Contact' will be reachable at any stage of the website.

My gallery pages will be separated into digital, screen printing and illustration with a teaser image for each that may have a rollover. I want to use the thumbnail idea and have cropped images beside the large one.

I quite like the idea of a floating module and having selected imagery on the page without the need for a scroll bar, as long as navigation is simple.

I am quite happy that my moodboards differ so much but still retain a lo-fi, orginised feel. I am warming up to the idea of colour in parts, but probably not in the background. White works well.

I came across this Jo Cheung's clever portfolio when checking out Amelia's Magazine. It has a really exciting, fresh feel to it and I especially like the opening page that intrigues the viewer enough to check it out further. It has a really welcoming tone. The text rollover from side contents bar and the dotted lines offer a point of difference.

This is the kind of tone I would like to go for and will explore one of the mood boards from here. watch this space ;)

For this I was thinking about removing all text and just keeping the dashed middle circle. I want to flesh out some ideas about layout. I like the bold graphic element to the scale. Even using a portion of the image could give strong interest.

The permanent contents bar format still appeals though. Will see what happens.

Gathering mood

These are a couple of photographs that I took last year by chance and for some reason they seem inspiring to me for a website! They have a crazy sense of angles and black on white, especially the top image of the birds resting.

I also like the time delay idea, maybe I could have roll over buttons that change subtly to a differing image. Would be quite keen to draw my own text. Electricity seems like a theme that has followed my work hmmmmmm.

Have been working on div boxes and hooray for structure! This Dan Funderburgh's portfolio has a really straightforward, simple layout with many projects, however they are presented in a really low-fi and condensed list. I like the name and contents together, reminds viewer of designer repeatedly. All about the images.

The reason why I like this portfolio was because of the layout of menu/image/updates. I think the illustrated menu really works as it suits the hand-drawn look. It looks really inviting, personable. Could be a bit more polished but I enjoy elements of the layout.

What is the purpose of online portfolio site? To showcase my textile and illustrative work to a wider audience, creating a professional and approachable portfolio. Getting my name out there, and expressing my personal aesthetic style.

Who is the audience? Potential employers and clients, fellow designers.Particularly interested in styling and magazine/journalism industries, but also want to appeal to textile design market. Will see how I can appeal to both.

What items of content are needed to meet these goals? Services, images of work: finals and workbook sketches, supporting statements, examples of writing, contact details, CV pdf.

How does the website work with a design identity or brand? I will probably use 'Kelly Olatunji." I have an alias gladisminor, and I like this identity, but may just keep it a side project zine for fun. Consistent font, style and colour.

What is the scope of the project? To showcase some projects and show my interest in textile design, illustration, museum studies and history.

What are the site requirements to meet these goals? Easy navigation, Strong content, Point of difference. Specifically: Homepage, contents bar, images, text, search engine tagging, gallery, CV, limited animation.

Profiles that are cool from the take off

I really enjoy Jess Wilson's page. It is a 'flash' site and it works really well how everything is in the same quirky/illustrative aesthetic. Collage use key. Gets her style across well. I found her site form IDN, where she won a competition.

Katie Lockhart is a no brainer, photography is stunning. It is quite simple. White. with little to no text apart from the titles. Should keep this in mind.
